Five Pillars of Islam & Prayer Basics

🕌 Introduction

The Five Pillars of Islam are the foundation upon which every Muslim’s faith and practice are built. They include:

  1. Shahādah – Declaration of Faith

  2. Ṣalāh – Five daily prayers

  3. Zakāt – Almsgiving

  4. Sawm – Fasting in Ramadan

  5. Ḥajj – Pilgrimage to Mecca

۔

1. 🎙 Shahādah – Declaration of Divine Oneness

“There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is His Messenger.”

This testimony is the gateway to Islam. It affirms Tawḥīd, the oneness of Allah, and connects us to the final Prophet ﷺ. The Qur’an states:

"Whoever bears witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His messenger will enter Paradise."

🏛 Scholarly Insight:

  • Imam al-Ghazālī, in Iḥyāʾ ʿUlūm al‑Dīn, emphasizes that Shahādah must come with heartfelt conviction—without which deeds remain superficial.

  • Najm al-Dīn al-Nasafī, in Sharḥ al-‘Aqā’id al-Nasafiyya, categorizes Tawḥīd (Shahādah) as the essential ‘aqīdah (creed) and anchor of Islamic belief.

2. 🕋 Ṣalāh – The Five Daily Prayers (Detailed Guide)

Ṣalāh is the central act of worship—performed five times daily facing the qiblah (Ka‘bah in Makkah). It consists of:

  1. Faŧā'āh prayer (Fajr)

  2. Ẓuhr (midday)

  3. ʿAṣr (afternoon)

  4. Maghrib (sunset)

  5. ʿIshāʾ (night)

🧭 Structure of Ṣalāh:

  • Wudūʾ (ablution)

  • Niyyah (intention)

  • Takbīr, Qiyām, Rukūʿ, Sujūd, and Tashahhud, concluding with Salām

🔑 Virtues & Wisdom:

  • The Prophet ﷺ stated:

“The first matter that the servant will be brought to account for on the Day of Judgment is Ṣalāh…”

  • European universities like Mishkah Academy point out that prayer brings spiritual discipline, humility, and a mental reset five times a day

📘 Recommended Books:

  • “The Prophet’s Prayer Described” by Shaykh Muḥammad Nāṣirud-Dīn al-Albānī

  • “An Authenticated Summary of the Prophet’s Prayer ﷺ” by Ḥāfiz Zubair ‘Alī Za’ī

  • “Fiqh-us-Sunnah” (Ibn Qudāmah) provides detailed jurisprudence on wudūʾ, invalidators, and correct actions.

3. 💸 Zakāt – Charitable Purification

Zakāt is the fixed share (2.5%) of wealth given each lunar year to specific categories of needy people

📿 Purpose & Benefits:

  • It purifies one's wealth from hoarding ($ zakāh taṭhīru lil-māl$).

  • Builds empathy, social welfare, and supports poverty alleviation

🔖 Scholarly books:

  • “Fiqh al-Zakāt” – series by Imām Taqī ‘Uthmān Darbandī

  • “The Book of Zakāt” in al‑Fiqh al‑Manhājī (Sheikh Wahba az-Zuhaylī)

4. 🌙 Sawm – Fasting in Ramadan

Every healthy adult Muslim must fast from dawn (Fajr) to sunset (Maghrib) during Ramadan—abstaining from food, drink, and marital relations.

🎯 Spiritual Significance:

  • Increased taqwā (God-consciousness)

  • Self-control and solidarity with the poor

  • Doors of mercy are open; prayers are answered more than other times

📚 Scholarly Works:

  • “Ihya’ Ulūm al-Dīn” — extensive chapters on Sawm by Imam al-Ghazālī .

  • “Fī Usool Sawm” – classical Maliki manual.

5. 🕇 Ḥajj – The Pilgrimage to Makkah

The once-in-a-lifetime pilgrimage, obligatory for those who are able. It includes Tawāf around Ka‘bah, Sa‘i between Ṣafā and Marwah, standing at ʿArafah, and symbolic stoning.

✨ Benefits:

  • Erases all sins

  • Universally unites Muslims

  • A spiritual rebirth

📖 Key Books:

  • "The Five Pillars of Islam" by Dr. Musharraf Hussain

  • “Manāsik al-Ḥajj wa’l-‘Umrah” by Ibn Qudāmah

🙏 Connecting It All: Prayer as Life’s Anchor

While all five pillars are crucial, Ṣalāh holds special status:

  • Called the “pillar of religion” by Prophet ﷺ

  • Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya stated:

“When prayer leaves the heart, Islam leaves the soul”

Consistent prayer shapes character, social behavior, and fixes one’s relationship with Allah, linking all pillars together.

📘 Scholarly & Book References

  • Imam al-Ghazālī, Iḥyāʾ ‘Ulūm al‑Dīn

  • Dr. Musharraf Hussain, The Five Pillars of Islam

  • Ibn Qayyim al‑Jawziyya, various works

  • Mishkah Academy articles on prayer structure & virtues

  • Ŷahāyān al-Nasafī, Sharḥ al-‘Aqā’id al‑Nasafiyya

  • Books on Prayer by al-Albānī and Muqbil al-Wādi‘ī

🧠 Conclusion

The Five Pillars are not rituals—they are a life system. From Shahādah’s declaration to the global unity of Ḥajj, these pillars construct the Muslim identity. Among them, Ṣalāh remains the ever-present anchor—connecting heart, soul, and community to Allah.

The Five Pillars of Islam –

"What Happens to Your Crypto & Social Media After Death? | Islamic View on Digital Inheritance” "

Introduction

In the digital age, Muslims around the world own more than just physical property. We store wealth in cryptocurrency, share content across social media platforms, and build audiences that hold value. Yet, few consider what happens to these digital assets after death. Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh) has a clear and rich framework for inheritance (al-mirath), but how does it apply to intangible digital properties? Let’s explore this topic using direct references from Islamic sources and contemporary scholars.

What Are Digital Assets?

Digital assets include:

·         Social Media Accounts (Facebook, Instagram, YouTube)

·         Cryptocurrency Wallets (Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.)

·         Domain Names and Blogs

·         Online Businesses and Websites

·         NFTs and Gaming Accounts

·         Cloud storage and data

These assets can generate ongoing revenue (e.g., YouTube monetization), or have significant resale value (e.g., NFTs or crypto).

Fiqhi Principle: What Constitutes Inheritable Property?

Imam al-Kasani (d. 587H) in his seminal work Bada’i al-Sana’i explains:

Everything that has measurable monetary value can be inherited.” (Bada’i al-Sana’i, Vol. 6)

This principle means if an asset can be owned, valued, and transferred, it is valid for inheritance. Thus, digital assets, having monetary value, fall under this category.

Sheikh Dr. Yusuf al-Qaradawi states in Fiqh al-Zakah:

“Ownership is not limited to tangible items. It includes rights, trademarks, and digital assets if they are recognized and protected by law.”

Cryptocurrency and Islamic Inheritance

Cryptocurrencies are perhaps the most challenging digital assets due to their anonymity and decentralized nature.

Sheikh Haitham al-Haddad (UK-based scholar and member of the Islamic Shariah Council) has publicly declared:

“Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, if recognized by law and accepted as a medium of exchange, are considered ‘mal’ (wealth) in Shariah. They must be included in inheritance distribution.”

Similarly, Mufti Faraz Adam (UK, Amanah Advisors) notes:

“Crypto-assets are transferable, valuable, and ownable. Thus, they qualify as wealth and should be included in a person’s estate upon death.”

Challenges in Implementation

  1. Password Protection: If heirs do not have access to wallets or accounts, wealth may be lost forever. Crypto wallets like Meta Mask or hardware wallets like Ledger require seed phrases.
  2. Legal Will (Wasiyyah): The Prophet Muhammad —peace be upon him— said:

“It is not permissible for any Muslim who has something to will to stay for two nights without having his will written and kept ready with him.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 2738)

  1. Ongoing Income (e.g., YouTube Revenue): Scholars like Sheikh Dr. Salah Al-Sawy (AMJA, USA) argue:

“If an online business or monetized channel continues to generate income, it must be treated like any rental income from property – distributable according to the shares of the heirs.”

Inheriting Social Media Accounts

Can a Facebook page or YouTube channel be inherited? Yes, if they have revenue potential or commercial branding value.

The European Council for Fatwa and Research (ECFR) issued a fatwa (Fatwa #4/19) stating:

“Social media accounts, if monetized or commercialized, become financial rights and are inheritable.”

Islamic scholars classify brand value or goodwill (e.g., followers, views, SEO rank) as intangible assets with financial implications.

What Should a Muslim Do Practically?

  1. Document All Digital Assets

o   List all usernames, passwords, recovery options

o   Mention the value and platform

o   Store this in a secure but accessible location

  1. Prepare a Wasiyyah

o   Specify who gets access to which assets

o   Clarify intentions for ongoing sadaqah (charity)

  1. Educate the Family

o   Ensure heirs understand the nature of your digital wealth

  1. Use Islamic Digital Will Tools Examples:

o   Waqf-compliant online platforms

o   Islamic estate planning services (e.g., Shariawiz, Wasiyyah.com)

Contemporary Scholarly Opinions

  • Dr. Monzer Kahf (Islamic Economist):

“We must update our understanding of mal (wealth) to include virtual currencies and assets… Our fiqh must respond to modern financial realities.”

  • Dr. Imran Usmani (Meezan Bank, Pakistan):

“Digital banking and blockchain technologies are realities. If money is stored in them, it becomes the responsibility of fiqh to integrate them into inheritance systems.”

  • Dar al-Ifta al-Misriyyah (Egypt’s official fatwa body):

“Digital accounts, passwords, cryptocurrencies should be documented in one’s will. Their neglect results in zulm (injustice) to rightful heirs.”

Reward or Responsibility?

Prophet Muhammad —peace be upon him— said:

“When a person dies, all actions stop except three: Sadaqah Jariyah, knowledge that benefits, or a righteous child who prays for them.” (Sahih Muslim, 1631)

A monetized YouTube Islamic channel or digital course can be your sadaqah jariyah — if its income is rightly distributed and used.

Neglecting digital inheritance can result in loss of wealth, fitnah among heirs, or even violation of Shariah.

Conclusion

In conclusion, digital assets are not abstract ideas; they are real, measurable, and ownable. They must be considered part of a Muslim’s estate. Scholars from all over the world now recognize the need to integrate modern digital realities with classical Islamic rulings. Every practicing Muslim should:

·         Recognize digital wealth as part of their legacy

·         Prepare a proper wasiyyah

·         Consult with scholars on specific scenarios

·         Ensure justice is done for their heirs in accordance with Quranic guidelines

Share this with your friends, family, and students. Let’s build a more aware Ummah in the digital age.

(Meezan Bank):**

5 Misunderstood Concepts in Islam That You Probably Believe

Introduction |

Islam is one of the most followed religions in the world, with over 1.9 billion believers across every continent. Despite its wide reach and rich legacy, Islam is often misunderstood—not just by non-Muslims, but sometimes even by those born and raised in Muslim families. These misconceptions can lead to confusion, guilt, and even loss of faith.

In this essay, we will uncover 5 common misconceptions about Islam, and reveal the truth through Islamic teachings.

1. Islam Oppresses Women |

This is perhaps one of the most repeated and misunderstood claims about Islam.

➡️ Reality (English):
Long before the West granted women the right to vote or own property, Islam granted women rights in inheritance, ownership, marriage, divorce, and education. Hazrat Khadijah (RA), the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ’s first wife, was a successful businesswoman. Islam honors women as mothers, daughters, wives, and sisters.

(Urdu):

2. All Non-Muslims are Enemies |

This belief has caused division and hatred—something Islam strictly forbids.

➡️ Reality (English):
The Qur’an teaches that there is no compulsion in religion (2:256). Prophet Muhammad ﷺ showed kindness to non-Muslims, including neighbors and even enemies. Islam encourages justice, fairness, and good character towards all people.

(Urdu):

3. If You Sin, You’re Not a Good Muslim |

Many Muslims feel hopeless because they commit sins, thinking they can never be close to Allah again.

➡️ Reality (English):
Everyone sins. What matters is repentance (tawbah). Allah says in the Qur’an: “Despair not of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins” (39:53). A good Muslim isn’t one who never sins, but one who always returns to Allah.

(Urdu):

4. Islam Spread by the Sword |

This is a myth often used to portray Islam as violent.

➡️ Reality (English):
Islam spread through character, trade, and truth—not violence. Indonesia, the country with the largest Muslim population today, was introduced to Islam through peaceful traders, not warriors.

(Urdu):

5. Hijab is Only About Clothing |

This is a common reduction of a much deeper Islamic concept.

➡️ Reality (English):
Hijab is not just a headscarf. It includes modest behavior, respectful speech, lowering the gaze, and avoiding arrogance. It applies to both men and women.

(Urdu):

Conclusion |

Misunderstanding Islamic teachings can weaken our faith and push others away from Islam. The best way to counter these misconceptions is through knowledge, reflection, and spreading truth.

Why Islamic Legal Wisdom Matters in Today’s World

Title: Why Islamic Legal Wisdom Matters in Today’s World

Author: FiqhFocus Team

📘 English Section

**Introduction**

In a fast-paced world filled with moral confusion, legal contradictions, and spiritual disconnection, Islamic legal wisdom—known as *Fiqh*—offers an ethical anchor. While many perceive Islamic law as rigid or outdated, a closer look reveals a dynamic system rooted in compassion, justice, and divine intent. This post explores why Islamic legal tradition is not only relevant in our time, but urgently needed.

**What is Fiqh?**

Fiqh refers to the deep understanding and interpretation of Islamic law derived from the Qur'an and the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Unlike statutory laws which are often rigid and subject to political motives, Fiqh adapts to time, place, and circumstance through scholarly tools such as *Qiyas* (analogical reasoning), *Ijma'* (consensus), and *Istihsan* (juristic preference).

**Fiqh in Everyday Life**

From personal hygiene to commercial contracts, Fiqh governs every aspect of a Muslim’s life. It regulates social behavior, marriage, inheritance, business ethics, and even environmental responsibility. For instance, the concept of *Amanah* (trust) in transactions is directly tied to Islamic ethics. Such teachings encourage Muslims to uphold integrity in both private and public dealings.

**Why It Matters Today**

We live in an age where financial exploitation, moral relativism, and identity crises dominate societies. In this context, the principles of Fiqh offer a path of clarity. The prohibition of interest (Riba), the emphasis on fairness in trade, and the prioritization of communal welfare over individual greed are just a few examples where Islamic law provides timeless solutions.

**Dispelling Misconceptions**

Many critics, both within and outside the Muslim world, misunderstand Fiqh as an oppressive system, particularly in matters relating to women or criminal punishments. But authentic Fiqh is not based on blind imitation; it is deeply contextual, rooted in scriptural understanding and the aims of the Shariah (*Maqasid al-Shariah*) such as preservation of life, intellect, property, faith, and family.

**The Role of Scholars and Ijtihad**

Fiqh has always evolved through *Ijtihad* (independent reasoning) by qualified scholars. This dynamism allows Islamic law to remain alive and applicable across cultures and centuries. The challenge today is the gap between traditional scholarship and contemporary realities. Hence, we must support institutions and scholars who bridge this divide.

**Fiqh Focus: Our Mission**

At Fiqh Focus, we strive to bring this sacred knowledge to modern audiences in a simplified, accessible, and meaningful way. Our aim is not to issue fatwas but to spark thoughtful engagement with Islamic principles.
